Why are you so passionate about coffee?
At the risk of sounding a little corny, we just think it's a special product. We love the way it smells. We love the authenticity and earthiness of the small coffee farms in the remote villages where we buy our beans. We love how people treat coffee as a little present, a moment of respite in the day.

Is there really a Simon?
Yes. He had his first cup of coffee with his grandmother, Mildred Craven. But it wasn't until he met a girl named Becky and followed her to Seattle that he really got caught up in coffee. If you've ever been to Seattle, you know what that's like.

Who are Benjamin and Adam? How did they get blends named after them?
They are Simon and Becky's kids, and the blends reflect their personalities. Benjamin's Blend is bright and lively; Adam's Northwest Blend is rugged and bold. (If you want a blend named after you, maybe you could get Simon and Becky to adopt you.)

What is organic coffee?
Organic coffee is grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides. To be certified organic, a farm must be chemical-free for three years.

What does "shade grown" mean?
Shade growing provides habitat for a rich diversity of species by cultivating a canopy of indigenous trees above the coffee plants.

Where is the most remote place you've ever traveled to find coffee beans?
In 1999, I finally made it to an organic farm in the Pluma region of Mexico. I say "finally" because the operation had been abandoned for six years and inaccessible for nine months after that thanks to Hurricane Pauline. Not to mention the flight from Mexico City to Oaxaca and the six hour drive from there. But the full-bodied, old-growth coffee and the view were worth the effort. I recommend both.
